Criterion 3: Limiting the effects of solar gains in summer
Evidence is required that non air-conditioned perimeter spaces will not experience excessive gains from the combined effects of solar gains from sunlight, heat emitted from fixed lighting, occupants and equipment. Assessment is made based on
detailed glazing specification, shading provided by the building and fixed shading devices
fixed values (CIBSE TM37) for occupancy and lighting based on space function
weather data for the region (CIBSE Guide A)
Calculated heat gains for all perimeter spaces will be provided. For any problem areas identified, recommendations will be made on how the gains can be reduced to acceptable levels. Likely recommendations will be of the type:
fit out lighting to a given maximum circuit wattage
specify daylight sensors, controls and appropriate light fittings
reduce glazed areas to suggested levels
change glazing specification to reduce transmitted heat
fit solar shading according to recommended specifications
We will discuss with you the suitability of the different options so that the most appropriate and cost effective changes can be implemented
